Wells, 8th February 2025

Fourteen of us met at Wells Cathedral for a chilly, misty walk along the East Mendip Way.

Wells Cathedral

From Wells Cathedral, we walked through the archway of Penniless Porch to the Bishop’s Palace via the market square. We continued alongside the moat and then up steep steps on to the ridge of the East Mendip Way. Views from here were very misty today.

Passing Tor Hill quarry, a (thankfully) docile bull, Wells golf course and King’s Castle Wood, we continued to our coffee/snack stop at the beautiful village of Croscombe. The little village of Croscombe nestles in the Mendip valley by the River Sheppey. Normally, there are good views across Somerset to Glastonbury Tor. Today….there was a lot of mist.

We took shelter in Croscombe church for our coffee/snack stop before heading towards the pretty village of Dinder. Dinder also nestles in the valley. The name Dinder actually means ‘in a deep valley between high hills’.

Walking through Dinder, we passed the impressive lychgate of Dinder church. A resting house for coffins.

We then made our way back to Wells. Descended along the path, the Bishops Palace and Cathedral came in to view to end our walk.

  1. A wonderful walk, Julie. Looking at the sky this morning I wish it could have been today but we have yet to find out whether it would have rained had it been!!
Thanks for organising it, can we go again in the good weather?
