Nine of us joined the Amblers walk today, starting at the Bell Inn, Buckland Dinham. We began the walk along a small section of the Macmillan Way with great views across East Mendip. We then followed the Mells River through woods, into Orchardleigh estate. We stopped for our coffee break at the beautiful little 13th century church of St Mary’s Orchardleigh, known as ‘the church on the island’. Due to the church’s remoteness there is no electricity. Services are conducted by candle light, with the organ being pumped by hand. The churchyard contains the grave of the poet Sir Henry Newbolt.

From the church, we rejoined the Macmillan Way via Orchardleigh golf course, back to the Bell Inn, Buckland Dinham, for lunch. A lovely walk.
