Walk Leader: Nigel Currie
16 of us set out from the Village Hall car park, under a cloudy sky in dry, windless conditions. We seemed to have the whole of this part of the Cotswolds to ourselves in the early part of the walk, however, later we encountered another walking group (see photo) and some cheerful dog walkers.
As the clouds lifted – and after something of a climb – we were able to make out the hills of South Wales across the Severn Valley.
The historical highlight of the walk was/is the 100 foot high Somerset (or Hawkesbury) monument built to recognise the life and achievements of Lord Robert Edward Somerset, Waterloo cavalry hero, and later, MP for Cirencester.
The walk took rather longer than anticipated (partly due to a rather generous coffee break!), but we were back in Hawkesbury Upton in time for 7 of us to enjoy a pub lunch at the friendly Beaufort Arms (as recommended in Robin Tetlow’s ‘Beyond Bristol’).
A good walk. Who is the 17th person in the group?
The 17th person was one of the Cotswold Walking Club.
I should have added there were two Daves, two Julies, and two Nigels on the walk….and that’s not counting the walker from the South Cotswolds Club included in our photo!
Thanks Nigel a very good walk, I also enjoyed the faggot lunch in the pub
